Developing Play Area in Anganwadis in most Backward Taluks

Physical development of a child depends on the activities he/she is involved in. The play equipments like swings and slides are the most popular outdoor play equipments for children. Most of the private play schools for small children in towns and cities have a facility of play area to impart a good physical exercise and make their learning interesting. It is needless to emphasize that the children in rural areas should also be given equal opportunities to their counter parts in urban areas. Thus, thinking in this direction a proposal was put forth before the Board on 1.6.2010 in its first Annual General body meeting to develop a small play area in the government run Anganwadi’s of the most backward Taluka’s of the Board area with an outlay of Rs.43.127 lakhs. The plan is approved ‘CHINNARA LOKA’ is being developed in selected Anganwadi’s by installing play equipments like Slide, Swing and a see-saw in an enclosed sand-pit at a unit cost of about Rs. 80,000.00 each. It is expected that this program will definitely encourage the parents of these rural areas to send their Children to Anganwadi’s on one hand and also create interest among the Children to attend the play school regularly.

Krushi Ghataka Yojane

In the year 2007-08, the Board had provided irrigation facilities to eligible beneficiaries of SC population to improve their agricultural productivity. Later, it was felt that providing only irrigation facilities may not improve their economic condition as they may not be aware of modern methods of utilizing the irrigation facility by adopting scientific method of cropping. Hence, the Board in co-ordination with an NGO called Shri Kshetra Dharmastala Gramabhiruddi Samsthe has planned to help out the SC beneficiaries by training and educating them about the scientific cropping techniques. In this regard the Board has provided Rs. 30.00lakhs in the Special component plan of 2010-11 to take up Krushi Ghataka Yojane. It is expected that this initiative may go a long way in enhancing the economic condition of the rural scheduled caste beneficiaries in a sustainable manner.

Construction of Hydro electricity units

Basic amenities like Road, Electricity, Drinking water is still a task to be achieved in remote villages of Malnad Area. Due to remoteness of these habitats, it is very likely that electricity will not reach these villages. Even if it does, the power supply will be erratic as frequent thunder storm and heavy rains lead to breakdown of the transmission system. Thus the people in the remote villages do look for a cost effective means of continuous power supply. As per the survey conducted by the Team comprising The National Innovation Foundation, Ahmedabad and Indian Institute of Technology, Khanpur and M/s Turbo, Turbine lights, Jaipur there were around 10,790 places in Karnataka where Hydro electric power can be generated in small scale by using the strength of streams. The most of the places identified are in Malnad region. Hence it is decided to construct modified hydro electric turbines in the selected remote villages of Chikkamagalore district. After the construction of modified hydro electric turbines the same will be handed over to respective Grama Panchyath for operation and maintenance.

Construction of Water Purification Units

Pure drinking water is the basic need of rural people. But it has been analysed by the National Collateral Management Services Ltd.and found that the water in the chosen villages of Kadur taluk in Chikmagalore district is not suitable for drinking. The water in these villages have the problem of excess TDS and fluoride content. Hence it is decided to construct water purification unit one each in these villages with the co-ordination of Shree Kshetra Dharmastala Gramabhirudi Yojane(regd) (SKDRDP) Chikmagalore. The SKDRDP is already successfully implementing this programme and the programme is successful. The cost of each water purification unit is Rs.10.00 lakhs. It will be shared equally by MADB and SKDRDP. After the construction of these units the operation and maintenance will be looked after by the later institution.

Construction of Liquid Waste Water treatment plants

The small towns in Malnad region (habitation) having business establishment like hotels, shops and some adjoining residential buildings do not produce any toxic waste water. But the liquid waste will be generated from the kitchen and bath rooms and the same waste is of domestic nature which can be treated using eco friendly methods. It is proposed to treat the waste water using innovative, eco friendly organic solutions. The treated liquid effluent can be re used for Horticulture in the near by areas are discharged into natural stream has it will conform to the CPCB norms for re use for irrigation or discharged into surface water bodies. In the first instance two towns in Dakshina Kannada district have been selected for construction of liquid waste water treatment plants.

Construction of Solar lighting units

  • Construction of 10 Suspension foot bridges across rivers in selected places to cater to the connectivity needs of rural population of malnad region in seven districts in 2010-11

  • Construction of 8 new Suspension foot bridges in 5 districts in 2011-12.
